The Sahara is expanding into the lives of the people who call this region “home”.

In the communities of R’kiz and Bareina, Mauritania, desertification and shifting sands are threatening homes, livelihoods, villages, and the cultural heritage of generations.

The Global Tree Initiative is raising $6,400 to support the planting of 2,000 trees as part of a local reforestation effort. The funds raised will be provided to our trusted local partner, ANAD (Association Nesser pour l’Agriculture et le Développement), who will carry out the tree-planting project on the ground in collaboration with local communities.

These trees will help stabilize dunes, reduce the impact of desertification, create cooler local environments, and help protect the communities and landscapes that people have called home for generations.

This project also contributes to the broader Great Green Wall Initiative for the Sahara and the Sahel; an African-led effort involving Mauritania and 10 other countries across the region to restore degraded land, combat desertification, strengthen livelihoods, and build resilient communities.

However, this project is about more than just planting trees. It is about helping people remain connected to their land, their villages, their culture, and their future.

Through ANAD’s local knowledge and community involvement, your contribution will directly support practical action to restore the land and strengthen the resilience of these communities.
