Dah Ebbe from Mauritania has been planting and dedicating trees for many years. If you missed the stories we shared before, you are welcome to look at the trees Dah Ebbe planted for his father, the Carob trees he planted in his garden, or learn about the ways ANAD combats desertification.

Recently, Dah Ebbe told us about the National Tree Planting Day in Mauritania. He shared that “we participated in National Tree Day yesterday, on Saturday, August 1st. Mauritania commemorates this day annually by planting 20,000 trees!”

On this same day, the Government of Mauritania launched a four-day aerial seeding campaign to tackle the widespread desertification, which affects more than 84% of the country. The initiative distributed three tons of drought-resistant native seeds across 8.7 million hectares, in nine regions, helping restore vegetation, stabilize sand dunes, improve soil fertility, and protect vital grazing lands. The campaign is part of broader national efforts to strengthen Mauritania’s resilience to drought and climate change.

The Great Green Wall

The four-day aerial seeding campaign also plays a vital role in the Great Green Wall Initiative.

Mauritania is making steady progress in its contribution to the Great Green Wall, moving beyond traditional tree planting toward broader land restoration, dune stabilization, ecosystem protection, and climate resilience. The country’s National Agency for the Great Green Wall is currently expanding restoration activities across several regions, including new projects focused on wetlands, degraded landscapes, and community resilience.

This year, Mauritania also introduced the above-mentioned drone-based aerial seeding to restore wide areas of degraded land, showing how the initiative is increasingly combining traditional restoration with new technology.
